She talks about all the assumptions and bad/and or annoying things white people have done to her, yet then goes on to make assumptions about all white people, for example, she explains the origin of her name, a name that is not a typical female name and most white people think she is a white male. My legs stilled.

But within my first few weeks of working there, the organization’s stereotypes, biases, or prejudices begin to emerge. Because the locking up of a disproportionate number of Black bodies is still too familiar.

It happened every first day of school, at roll call. Reading this book has allowed me to begin (and it is only a beginning) to understand the truth of white supremacy and racism in the world today and to begin to understand how it might be possible to work toward change. This is a compelling book that seems to be part memoir, part anti-racist discussion. She writes it clearly and well.

Would an atheist be able to relate to this book? I didn’t grow up in another country, in the Deep South or the hood.

Did she not see all the recent books on my account? Even if it's not your thing, I think anyone can get something out of it. But as the book went on, all I sensed was anger and hostility towards white People.

The best time for me to read a memoir is after finishing a fantasy novel – in this case The Wicked King – because while fiction and non-fiction do share similarities (at least they should), plunging into something very different makes you even more aware of what you’re reading currently.

The boys and girls automatically gravitated to opposite sides of the room, and when my name was called, I had to do jumping jacks to get the teacher’s attention away from the “boys’ section.” So how did I know this wasn’t more of the same?

I went school in the 70s and 80s so my experience was different but I was surprised to hear about hers as I had assumed things had changed somewhat since I had been in school. Not for the faint of heart—but more of us white people should be brave. Austin also describes other experiences of not being able to relate to teachers when they give examples in class (such as referencing television shows, music, or hobbies), and while there is nothing wrong with being upset about that, she makes it seem as if it was personal, when in fact a white teacher will probably use an example from their personal lives or one that most of the children would understand, and since most of her classmates were white it makes sense.

Particularly exhausting are white people who don’t know they are white, and those who need to be white. But of all the white people I’ve met—and I’ve met a lot of them in more than three decades of living, studying, and working in places where I’m often the only Black woman in sight—the first I found exhausting were those who expected me to be white.

This was a tough read for a do-gooder white lady to read. I tilted my head in exasperation, rolling my eyes toward the popcorn ceiling.

They were expecting a white man. I didn’t quite understand my mother’s point about job applications—to that point, the only application I had filled out was probably for the library card in my hand. I continue to be drawn toward the collective participation of seeking good, even when that means critiquing the institution I love for its commitment to whiteness.
